Japan Airlines

Japan Airlines was established in 1951. In 1953 it became the national airline of Japan. After more than 3 decades of service and expansion, JAL was privatised in 1987. Five years later, the carrier merged with Japan's 3rd-largest airline, Japan Air System, and became the world's 6th largest airline by passengers carried.

Currently, Japan Airlines is an official sponsor of Japan national football team, Japan Football Association, Consadole Sapporo and Shimizu S-Pulse. The main competitor of JAL is All Nippon Airways, the largest carrier in Japan.

Japan Airlines Classes

  • Japan Airlines introduced new international First/Executive Class seats: JAL Suite for First Class features a seat 20% roomier than Skysleeper Solo in 1-2-1 configuration; and JAL Shell Flat Neo Seat for Executive Class Seasons, slightly revised version of airline's original Shell Flat Seat, with expanded center console and a wider seat; and the first in-flight photo art exhibit in the world, Sky Gallery. These seats, together with Premium Economy seats, debuted on August 1, 2008 on JAL Flights 5 and 6, operated on Tokyo–New York route. It then expanded to Tokyo–San Francisco and Tokyo–Chicago and Los Angeles. Since October 31, 2010, the new cabin is used on flights from Narita to Jakarta.
  • In 2013, Japan Airlines debuted new versions of their economy/premium economy seats named Sky Premium/Sky Wider Economy. The Sky Premium seats have the same width as Sky Shell seats but with a 4-inch larger seat pitch of 42 inches and a 3-inch larger recline of up to 10 inches compared to a 38-inch pitch and 7-inch recline on Sky Shell seats. Sky Wider Economy seats have slimmer seats with 4 inches more legroom, as well as another inch of width and total up to 35 inches of seat pitch, and 19-inch width compared to the 31-inch pitch and 18-inch width of standard economy seats, as well as a larger PTV screen up to 11 inches. The newer 787's boast a new version of Sky Wider seats named Sky Wider II, with 5 inches more legroom and 2 inches more width and total up to 36 inches of seat pitch and a 20-inch width in less dense 2-4-2 setup instead of 3-3-3 setup used in 787's economy cabin.
  • Japan Airlines international services with existing cabins have the fully reclining First Class Skysleeper Solo/Skysleeper, Executive Class Seasons Shell Flat Seat/Skyluxe Seat, as well as Premium Economy Sky Shell Seat and Economy Class. First Class Skysleeper Solo reclines fully. It features genuine leather upholstery from Italy's Poltrona Frau. Executive Class Seasons Shell Flat Seat is lie-flat with the ability to lower armrests to the height of the seat when reclined. Carrier's Premium Economy was first introduced on Tokyo–London route on December 1, 2007. It boasts shell-shaped seat allowing passengers to recline via sliding their seat forward. The seat in front is not intruded when reclining.
  • On Japan Airlines domestic services, the carrier offers Economy Class, J Executive Class and First Class. The First Class seats are made from premium genuine leather with a width of around 53 cm (21 in) and seat pitch 130 cm (51 in). Class J offers ergonomically designed reclining seats which promote relaxation via allowing travelers to move naturally and maintain their balanced posture. JAL refitted its domestic fleet with leather seats along with in-flight wireless internet.

  2. Priority boarding: following pre-boarding passengers are passengers in premier cabin and Frequent Flyer Program status members.
  3. Next are passengers seated in rear cabin. In order to avoid congestion in the cabin, this is followed by seat numbers.
