American Airlines Inc. (AA) is one of the world’s largest airlines, headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, USA within Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. American Airlines is the largest airline in the world when measured by revenue, fleet size, number of destinations served and scheduled passenger-kilometers flown.

Together with its partners in the region, AA operates an extensive domestic and international network with an average of about 6,700 flights per day to about 350 destinations in over 50 countries.

American is a founding member of the 3rd largest airline alliance in the world, Oneworld alliance, and coordinates services, scheduling and fares with alliance partners Iberia, Finnair and British Airways in the transatlantic market, Japan Airlines and Cathay Pacific in the transpacific. Regional service is operated by subsidiary and independent carriers under the brand name American Eagle.

American Airlines operates out of 10 hubs situated in Dallas/Fort Worth (American's largest passenger carrying hub), Chicago-O'Hare, Charlotte, DC-National, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Miami, Washington, Los Angeles, New York-JFK, New York-LaGuardia. AA operates a primary maintenance base located at Tulsa International Airport, as well as maintenance locations at its hubs. Through the parent company of the airline, American Airlines Group, it’s publicly traded under NASDAQ: AAL. As of 2017 its market capitalization is about US$25 billion.

American Airlines History

American Airlines Inc. was established in 1930 through a union of more than 80 small airlines. The organizations from which it was originated were Colonial Air Transport and Robertson Aircraft Corporation. In 1929 both were merged into holding The Aviation Corporation, which in 1930 was rebranded as American Airways. When in 1934 many airlines were forced to reorganize due to new laws and attrition of mail contracts, the corporation redid routes into connected system, and changed its name to American Airlines. Between 1970-2000, the company expanded into an international carrier. In 2001 it purchased Trans World Airlines.

Because of a downturn in airline industry, in 2011 the parent company of American Airlines, AMR Corporation, filed for bankruptcy protection. AA and US Airways merged in 2013. US Airways operations and management from both airlines were eventually merged under one operating certificate and the largest United States airline was created, keeping the brand name American Airlines.

  • American Airlines headquarters are in Fort Worth TX, adjacent to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. They are located in a couple of office buildings in CentrePort office complex. These buildings together feature about 130,000 m2 (1,400,000 ft2) of space. As of 2014 more than 4,300 employees work at the complex. As of 2015 AA is the corporation with largest Fort Worth presence.
  • As of November 2013 American Eagle and American Airlines receive US$10,011,836 annual federal subsidies for Essential Air Services. The subsidies are awarded through public tender and ensure that rural airports can be linked with the national air network.
  • Violations that occured from October 1993 through July 1998 targeted American Airlines company for using high-sulfur fuel in motor vehicles at a total of ten major airports around the US. Under federal Clean Air Act high sulfur fuel can’t be used in motor vehicles. AA promptly corrected the violations of Clean Air Act and currently its wastewater treatment plants recycle water used to wash aircraft and process rinse water tanks. Since 2002 that alone has saved nearly US$1 million. In addition, American Airlines has won an award for reduction of hazardous waste which saved them US$229,000 after a US$2,000 investment. Bar code system tracks hazardous waste. This has led to waste reduction by 50% since 2000.
  • American Airlines (AA) is title sponsor of a couple of basketball venues: American Airlines Arena (Miami Heat) and American Airlines Center (Dallas Mavericks), (Dallas Stars). The airline sponsors a number of professional sports teams: Chicago Cubs, Carolina Panthers, Dallas Mavericks, Dallas Cowboys, New England Revolution and New England Patriots.

AA Hubs

American Airlines operates 10 hubs across continental U.S.:

1. Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW):- the primary hub of American, the largest hub in terms of number of destinations and daily flights as well as primary hub for the South. Currently, American Airlines has around 85% of the market share and flies approx 56 million passengers through DFW per year, which is around 153,000 people per day making AA the busiest line at the airport. The corporate headquarters of American Airlines are also in Fort Worth close to the airport. DFW (Dallas/Fort Worth) has been the biggest hub of AA in terms of passenger traffic since the merger with US Airways. Dallas/Fort Worth serves as the primary gateway of American Airlines to Mexico, as well as secondary to Latin America.

2. Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT): American Airlines’ 2nd-largest hub in terms of daily flights and number of destinations. It is also line's primary hub for the Southeastern US. Around 42 million travelers fly through CLT on AA per year, or about 115,000 per day. As of 2013 American Airlines has around 90% of the market share at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, making it the largest airline at the airport. CLT was previously the largest hub of US Airways before the merger with AA.

3. O'Hare International Airport: The 3rd-largest hub of American Airlines in terms of number of flights and primary hub for the Midwest. Around 27 million passengers fly on AA through O'Hare per year, or around 74,000 per day. As of 2013 the airline has approx 40% of the market share at the airport making it the 2nd-largest after United. O'Hare was AA's 2nd-largest hub before the merger with US Airways.

4. Philadelphia International Airport (PHL): The 4th-largest hub in terms of daily flights’ number and primary East Coast hub of the airline. American Airlines flies approx 23 million passengers per year through PHL, or approx 63,000 per day. As of 2013 AA has around 70% of the market share at Philadelphia International Airport, making it the largest airline here. PHL was the 2nd-largest hub of US Airways before the merger with American. PHL is also the primary transatlantic and European gateway of American Airlines.

5. Miami International Airport (MIA): The 5th-largest hub of AA in terms of number of flights. Approx 30 million passengers fly through the airport per year on American Airlines, which is approx 82,000 per day. AA has around 70% of the market share at MIA, making it the largest airline here. Miami International Airport was previously AA's 3rd-largest hub before the merger with US Airways. Miami is also American Airways’ primary Caribbean and South American gateway.

6. Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX): The 6th-largest hub in terms of number of destinations and flights and primary western hub of the airline. American Airlines flies approx 23 million people per year through PHX, or approx 63,000 per day. Currently AA has around 52.6% of the market share at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, making it the largest airline here. PHX was previously the 3rd-largest hub of US Airways before the merger with American. Phoenix is AA’s only major domestic hub with no service to Europe or Asia.

7. Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA): The 7th-largest hub for American Airlines in terms of number of flights and destinations and 3rd hub for the East Coast. Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport also serves as the base for American Airlines Shuttle. Around 12 million people fly through DCA on American Airlines per year, or around 33,000 per day. AA has approx 23.7% of the market share at the airport, making it the largest carrier here. DCA was the 4th-largest hub of US Airways before the merger with American.

8. Los Angeles International Airport (LAX): The 8th-largest hub in terms of number of flights and destinations, as well as airline's hub for the West Coast. Around 15 million passengers fly through Los Angeles International Airport on American per year, or around 41,000 per day. American Airlines has approx 18.9% of the market share at the airport, making it the largest carrier here. LAX was AAn's 4th-largest hub before the merger with US Airways. It is also American's transpacific gateway.

9. John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK): The 9th-largest hub of American Airlines in terms of number of flights and destinations, as well as AA's secondary hub for the East Coast. Approx 9.4 million passengers fly through John F. Kennedy International Airport on American Airlines every year, or around 26,000 per day. American owns about 11% of JFK’s market share, making it the 3rd-largest carrier at the airport after Delta and JetBlue. The airport was American Airlines’ 5th-largest hub before the merger with US Airways. JFK is also AA's secondary transatlantic and European gateway.

10. LaGuardia Airport (LGA): The 10th-largest hub of American Airlines in terms of number of flights and destinations, as well as 4th hub for the East Coast. Around 7.5 million passengers fly via LGA on AA annually, or approx 21,000 per day. The airport serves as the base for American Airlines Shuttle. The airline has approx 28% of the market share at LaGuardia Airport, and is the 2nd-largest carrier behind Delta.

Destinations

During the 1970s American Airlines operated interchange services in conjunction with Alaska Airlines between Texas and Alaska due to the construction of Trans-Alaska oil pipeline. The interchange agreement allowed no change of service between Houston TX and Dallas/Fort Worth TX, and Anchorage, Alaska and Fairbanks. The round-trip routing of the interchange flight was Houston-DFW-Seattle-Anchorage-Fairbanks with Seattle WA serving as interchange point where crews were exchanged from one airline to the other. The interchange service was provided by Boeing 727-200 jetliners.

American Airlines is the only carrier in the United States that flies to Brasilia, Barranquilla, Belo Horizonte, Cali, Caracas, Cap-Haitien, Cienfuegos, Guayaquil, Fort-de-France, La Paz, Maracaibo, Manaus, Montevideo, Pointe-a-Pitre, San Salvador, Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Varadero. In terms of passenger volume AA is the leading US carrier to Cuba.

  • Main Cabin Extra (early boarding and more legroom). Amenities include: Main Cabin Extra seat, starting at US$20, with additional legroom, preferred boarding and earlier exit. These seats are situated in front of the Main Cabin. They are offered on most flights and are subject to availability. Wi-Fi on select aircraft; free inflight entertainment (wireless streaming, seatback and overhead screens, tablets).
  • Main Cabin (free entertainment and snacks). Amenities include: drinks, snacks and meals for free or to buy, depending on the route; Wi-Fi on select aircraft; free inflight entertainment (wireless streaming, seatback and overhead screens, tablets).
  • Basic Economy (lowest Main Cabin fare). Amenities still include free soft drinks, snacks and inflight entertainment, but there are some restrictions, such as: travelers can choose specific seats within 48 hours prior to departure, but a fee applies. Otherwise, seats are automatically assigned for free at the time of check in. Travelers can board with one item like a purse (small handbag) which fits under the seat in front and is not bigger than 18x14x8 in (45x35x20 cm), and they don't have access to overhead bins. Basic Economy passengers board in last group and no flight changes or refunds are possible.

Baggage

In all cabins travelers are allowed one carry-on bag and one personal item. Those who bought a Basic Economy ticket are only allowed one personal item. Some items can only travel in a carry-on bag, and some must be checked. Travelers have to make sure they know where to pack the restricted items and if they can carry them on.

To prevent inflight danger, a lot of common items are restricted by the TSA (Transportation Security Administration) and FAA (Federal Aviation Administration). Those travelling with objects on FAA Pack Safe Hazmat or TSA prohibited items restrictions lists, they will be confiscated.

  • Carry-on baggage: one personal item and one bag (the personal item has to fit under the seat in front of the traveler. Dimensions shouldn't exceed 18x14x8 inches/45x35x20 cm). The carry-on should not exceed 22x14x9 in/56x36x23 cm (including wheels and handles), must fit in the airport's sizer. TSA allows some duty-free liquids through security in a carry-on bag in case they are packaged in security tamper-evident bag. Have in mind that American Airlines Basic Economy clients are allowed 1 personal item only and all other bags have to be checked.
  • Checked baggage: American Airlines baggage fees are based on regions. Travelers have to find their country to get better understanding of fees. They can check up to 10 bags if their trip is domestic, Transpacific or Transatlantic; and check up to 5 bags if they are traveling to, through or from: Mexico, Caribbean and Central America, South America and Brazil. The airline calculate the size limits of the bag by adding the outside dimensions of each bag, length+ width+height. For all regions, the checked baggage allowance is: 62 in (158 cm); Weight: 50 lbs (23 kgs). Weight for First/Business Class and Brazil is 70 lbs (32 kgs). During busy travel seasons, American Airlines place limitations on checked baggage on some flights.

Boarding

  • Check the latest travel alerts before your flight and get flight status info for gates and times. Download American Airlines app at aa.com to get access to all info you need before, during and after the flight.
  • Learn about checkpoint security screening process and policies. Visit the website of Transportation Security Administration's (TSA) for travel info including accepted forms of I.D., modified screening, clearing checkpoints, and more.
  • Check in online beginning 24 h and up to 45 min before the flight (90 min for international).
  • Completing check-in, check baggage and clear security takes time, so American Airlines recommend arriving as early as possible - at least 1 hour and 30 minutes prior to departure when flying within the U.S. When traveling outside of the U.S., the airline recommend 2 hours prior to departure.
  • When arriving in the United States from an international location, travelers have to claim their checked bags at the 1st stop within U.S. and proceed through Immigrations/Customs.
  • When flying internationally and connecting to a different airline, travelers have to check the applicable Customs procedures to determine if checked baggage has to be re-checked upon arrival into the country.
  • Flagship First Check-In is a special AA feature including an exclusive check-in area, expedited security access and personalized assistance. It is available to Qualifying First class, Qualifying AAdvantage Executive Platinum, ConciergeKey, oneworld Emerald and Five Star Service customers at the following airports: Chicago O'Hare (ORD), London Heathrow (LHR), Los Angeles (LAX), Miami (MIA), New York (JFK).
  • Get your mobile boarding pass via checking in on aa.com and choosing 'Email with Mobile Option.' The mobile boarding pass can be used at most airports. Once you get the boarding pass, scan the barcode at airport security checkpoints and at the gate when boarding for American Airlines flights.

Wi-Fi

To see if a flight has Wi-Fi, travelers have to look for the symbol on their boarding pass or check before they go. American Airlines Wi-Fi is available on about all flights within the United States. Daily and monthly passes are available or passengers can access aa.com without no pass.

Wi-Fi service is offered when traveling internationally as well as on select domestic routes on American Airlines 787 Dreamliner, 777-300ER, and select 777-200 airplanes. Passes may only be bought once travelers are onboard, and cost: 2-hour (US$12); 4-hour (US$17); for the length of flight (US$19).

Premium dining is offered with First, Business and Premium Economy classes onboard American Airlines planes. Meals are healthy and customized to travel with menus varying depending on when and where customers are traveling. AA premium cabins are stocked with complimentary wines, beers, and spirits to complement the menu. Each wine served by the airline goes through a selective process as part of award-winning wine program. Meals can be reserved on American-marketed and operated flights 30 days before your trip or at the time of booking. Premium Dining is offered via partnership with award-winning chefs and restaurateurs Maneet Chauhan, Mark Sargeant, Sam Choy and Julian Barsotti.

Drinks and snacks are included in the fare of Main Cabin class. Biscoff cookies and mini pretzels are offered on flights more than 250 miles.
